Pick Your Survival Knife Carefully

The main tool for surviving an emergency situation in the wilderness environment which is specifically designed for this is your survival knife. It can be used for many survival tasks, trapping, skinning, cutting wood, and others.

When Looking to buy a Survival Knife there are 4 key aspects to look for:

1) The Tang of the Blade
2)The Blade Material
3)The Blade Shape/Design
4)The Handle

TANG
The tang is the part of the blade that goes into the handle. The best knife will be constructed of one piece of metal, that piece will run down through the handle. On the sides of the metal will be a high quality material that will form the handle. This style of tang is known as "full tang" or "narrow tang". Because of the support and durability of having a "full tang" you should always look for this in a survival knife. Cheap knives will have a blade that is separate from a handle severely lowering the durability of the knife.

BLADE MATERIAL
The two main steels that are used in high quality survival blades are Stainless Steel and Carbon Steel. Stainless Steel blades are rust resistant and work well in wet environment. A stainless steel blade tends to require less care than Carbon Steel. A downside with Stainless Steel they are more difficult to sharpen. Carbon Steel blades will never rust if used regularly or coated. Survival Knives with Carbon Steel usually tend to hold a sharper edge longer than stainless steel. The harder the material of the blade will hold and edge longer.

BLADE SHAPE AND DESIGN
The choice of a straight blade or a serrated one is still under debate. When looking at a straight blade keep in mind the benefits that it is much easier to sharpen. A serrated blade can cut rope easier, but almost always requires a special type of sharpener. Some survival knives will come with a straight blade as the main cutting edge with a serrated edge on the back. If you are looking for both types of blade design this is a great choice.

THE HANDLE
The type of handle on survival knives can vary widely. Some knives will come with a hollow handle, while this can come in handy you are sacrifice having a knife with a "full tang." The actual handles can be made from rubber or other types of polymers. Some handles are metal that are wrapped in rubber. The handle should be grooved, checkered or knurled to fit your hand. A smooth handle can get slippery and dangerous to use.

Choosing a good survival knife can be a challenge. With a little research and knowledge you can be confident in your choice.

My review basically agrees with the previous review. Although I had read up on the Safe Maker I and knew it's dimensions, seeing it in person and holding it in your hands is a different matter. I, too, feel it's a bit too big to be practical as the stealth weapon it's meant to be. Kinda wish I'd gone for the Safe Maker II instead. That said, though, this is a beautifully-made knife, solid and well-crafted. More of a conversation/collector piece than a carry knife.

Also, be advised that it is not easy to pull this thing out of the sheath. Good in that it certainly won't fall out at inopportune times. Bad in that, should you find yourself in sudden need, you may end up having to tell 'concerned parties' to, "Hang on a minute, I'll be right with you... "

I did a lot of research into a a large folding knife that would have "tactical" characteristics AND be a good knife for hunting/skinning. I found it in the Kershaw Lahar. I wanted quality steel and VG10 is one of the best. Most knives of similar quality were 0 or more. It is a heavy tactical knife. If I were a cop or soldier, I would want something lighter, but as a regular joe, I like the heft of it. It is a LARGE knife as well. Look at videos on YouTube to get an idea. Quality knife that came nice and sharp. Feels good in the hand and flips out well. You can also switch it from point down to point up when carrying it.

The History of G.I. Joe-The First Twenty-Five Years

G.I. JOE was the first boy's "Action Figure" in the world. G.I. Joe first hit the scene as an 11-1/2 inch "doll" for boys. What made G.I. Joe unique was its 21 moving parts for interactive play. G.I. Joe is named after the movie "The Story of G.I. JOE" which gained great popularity in the early sixties.

Due to the popularity of G.I. Joe, the Hasbro Company that invented the action figure decided to expand the brand's line in 1967. Hasbro introduced the Canadian Mountie set of G.I. Joes.

Five years after the original G.I. Joe Hasbro was producing all categories of the United States Armed Forces action figures as well as many foreign armed forced. It wasn't until 1969 that "G.I. Joe" went from being the name of one specific action figure, to the name of an entire line of action figures for boys.

By the 1970s the G.I. Joe brand was doing quite well and Hasbro kept thinking of innovative ways to keep their successful brand alive. It was at this time that they started producing the G.I. Joe Adventure Team, which was comprised of a group of soldiers all committed to the same goal as G.I. Joe.

As the seventies continued to evolve, so did G.I. Joe. He was given flocked hair, and even some G.I. Joes came with a kung-fu grip. It was in the seventies that the first superhuman team member was introduced, his name was Bulletman. Other new team members introduced in the seventies included Eagle Eye and The Defenders.

G.I. Joe found a force that he could not defeat in 1978 when the price of petroleum grew so high that G.I. Joe production was suspended. It wasn't until 1982 that the line was re-introduced in a smaller size. The smaller size action figures were created as a direct result of keeping production costs lower to accommodate the price of petroleum.

It was also in 1982 that G.I. Joe was licensed with Marvel Comics. This partnership was very lucrative for Hasbro and Marvel with $200 million in combined revenue by 1984. At the time there were uniforms, weapons, vehicles and comic books rounding out the G.I. Joe brand.

Also in the early eighties G.I. Joe found himself fighting a slew of adversaries including the Drednoks. By this time the brand had grown so large that real human characters were being incorporated into the G.I. Joe adventure team. The first was professional wrestler Sgt. Slaughter followed by Chicago Bears legend William "The Refrigerator" Perry.

Cornhole Game Bean Bags

I get many emails each day from curious people asking about the game of Cornhole. With that in mind I decided to write a couple articles to maybe clear up some of the myths and facts of the game. Thank you for stopping by and I hope you get some useful information from reading them.

Cornhole bags are offered in many different colors, designs and sizes.

Q. What is a regulation Cornhole bag?

A. According to the American Cornhole Association, here is the specifications on a regulation cornhole bag.

8. The corn bags shall be made from two fabric squares with a quarter inch double stitched seam on all four sides. The corn bags should be made from 12 oz / sq yd duck canvas and may be any color that is easy to see during Cornhole play. Each bag shall be filled with approximately 2 cups of corn feed and finished bags should be a minimum of 6" X 6" square and weigh between 14 and 16 ounces.

Common questions to ask a seller.

Are the bags made of 12 oz. Duck Cloth?

Duck cloth comes in different ounce weights. #12 oz. duck cloth is heavy and durable for a long lasting bag. Anything less is cheaper and will not last as long. There is a reasonable difference in quality between 12 oz 10 oz and 8 oz duck cloth. I would not settle for less than #12 oz duck cloth.

Do the bags weigh between 14 and 16 ounces?

Bags that are under or over weight are not regulation and do not provide a consistent playing field.

Are the bags filled with real whole kernel corn?

If it is not whole kernel corn, it's not regulation. Whole kernel corn produces a fine dust that is used to provide a coating for your bags and boards for consistent play. Also synthetic fillers will most likely cause your bag to be over filled or under filled to meet the weight requirements. Popcorn and pinto beans are not regulation.

Logo printed materials are not Duck Cloth and are not regulation. These materials may look nice, but they do not provide a consistent playing field. These materials often shred and tear under normal Cornhole play. Placing these materials over duck cloth also provides inconsistent play.

Decal / Iron On Logos. These may look nice as well, but they will not last when playing on a concrete surface, as they will begin to wear after one game.

Embroidered Logos. These are over all some of the nicest bags you can buy. The logo is stitched into the material and provides a nice personalized touch to your cornhole bags.

What do I consider A High Quality Cornhole Bag?

Made with nothing less that 12 oz. 100% Duck Cloth, filled with whole kernel corn feed between 14 and 16 oz, 6 inches by 6 inches after filled, double stitched with Heavy duty upholstery thread.

I am relatively satisfied with this hatchet. It does come out of the package very sharp, but not razor shop. You will have to take out your whetstone if you want that kind of sharpness. It is lightweight and compact. I found it to be excellent for the purpose for which I bought it, namely to chop through ivy vines 2 or 3 inches thick that have grown up on my trees over the years and have gotten way out of hand. The back of the blade has a nice hole in it, so you can put the hatchet away by hanging it on a nail or peg if you want to. There is a rectangular flat area on the back of the blade that you could use for hammering if needed... just be sure you don't accidentally whack yourself in the face on the upswing. Several people have expressed concern about the handle's being made of plastic. However, it is very durable, and I sincerely doubt you will ever break it. The real concern with the plastic blade is that the hard surface and the flat cross-section make the handle a bit slippery and unstable in the hand, especially if you are wearing work gloves. This can cause the blade to wobble to the side a tiny bit as you swing so that it can strike a glancing blow, or at least not a perfectly aligned blow. I find myself gripping the handle extra tight to control this, to the point that the muscles in my hand tire rather quickly from the tight grip required. Of course a pure wooden handle would pose the same problem. The plastic handle does have a series of grooves in it running half-way around the diameter, presumably to inhibit the hatchet from flying out of your hand as you swing it. It might help if there were some grooves that run along the length of the handle to help prevent rotational movement as I have described. Bottom line is that if you are going to use your hatchet for long periods at a time you would be better off with a hatchet that has ergonomic rubber-clad handle. But for occasional light duty use this hatchet is fine. The price is very reasonable also.

Low Pressure Vs. High Pressure Paintball Tanks

Should I get a high pressure or low pressure N2 or HPA tank for my paintball gun?

That's a good question. Let's get a few things straight first. The terms "nitrogen tank" and "high pressure air" (HPA) tank mean the same thing. Fields and stores use compressed air to fill the tanks because air is more easily accessible. In the past, nitrogen was more readily available to fields than more expensive compressors. Today if you walk into a store and ask for a nitro tank or a nitro fill they will know what you mean.

Second, "high pressure" or "low pressure" refers to the actual output pressure of the regulator on your tank. The regulator controls the pressure that your tank will use in your gun. High pressure tanks usually output 800 to 850 PSI. Low Pressure tanks usually output 450 PSI. Preset tanks have a fixed output pressure from the factory which cannot be adjusted. Both HP and LP tanks have preset outputs. Adjustable tanks like the Nitroduck X-stream or the Empire Adjustable don't have a fixed output pressure and can be adjusted by the player to any output pressure they need. This article will focus on preset tanks because you can use adjustable tanks for any gun.

Now is HP or LP right for your gun? There are a few things to keep in mind when considering this. First, what pressure does your gun need to cycle and shoot a paintball? (This is called the operating pressure.) Tippmanns, Spyders and other entry level guns need 800 PSI or higher to operate, so you would need an HP tank with these guns to generate enough pressure to allow the gun to operate. So if you have a gun that needs 800 PSI to work and you hook up a 400 PSI LP tank to it, you are not putting in enough pressure to allow the gun to work. This is why you would need a high pressure tank.

Mid- to higher-end guns typically operate with less than 300 PSI input pressure and come with a high pressure regulator. High pressure regulators go inline (in between) the tank and the gun. These regulators can accept an input pressure of up too 850 PSI and regulate it down to a user-adjustable setting to meet the markers' LP needs. LP guns can use LP tanks. Using an LP Tank with an LP gun will result in better shot consistency over the chrono because you are not putting as much stress on the inline high pressure regulator. Having an LP tank with an LP gun will also prevent or minimize hot shots if your inline regulator fails. It will minimize the high pressure air spike going into the gun which will typically cause your velocity to spike up as well.

So in short, if you have an HP gun or an LP gun with an HP regulator, you can use an HP tank. LP guns can also use an LP tank. Some guns, like the Angel Speed 05, come with a built-in, inline LP regulator so they can only use LP tanks. As technology advances we are seeing more and more entry level guns becoming LP, so it's always best to check with the manufacturer of your marker for their tank recommendations. And never buy a new tank before you buy a new gun.

I don't see why people buy things and try to use them for what they are not designed to do? This is the smaller of the Boot Blades and I have both of them. Both are great letter openers and both would be nice to have with you if you are ever attacked. You could do some serious damage with this on a person or animal. The blades are not sharp like a real blade but if you stabbed someone it would still cut them open. If you want a sharp blade then spend the money and get a metal blade knife. What I like is that I don't have to worry about them rusting or corroding and in an emergency when someone is attacking me at least I'll have something that is sharp enough to stop them. Cold Steel's metal boot knife is 63.00 compared to this 10.00 blade. I can buy six of these for the price of a metal one and still protect myself and they are not the quality of the metal knife but wasn't made to be. I would like to see someone break one of these, and show me the abuse they used to break it. These are strong little Grivory knives..I also plan on buying the FGX TAI PAN and the FGX PUSH BLADE 2..Cheers.

Hiking is one of the best forms of exercise there is. Not only is it a great cardiovascular workout but it is a fantastic way to get outdoors and experience the beauty of nature. Finding the right equipment and tools to use when making sushi should not be a problem in most major metropolitan areas. Just look for Japanese or Asian markets in your city. But if you don't live in, or near, a large city, you should be able to find everything you need online.

They go mad when they don't have a certain ingredient that a recipe book states. I hate to see that. I mean come on, let's be creative and use the recipe books only as basis. It can help us but it shouldn't keep us from giving our food an extra personal taste.

Star Wars, The Old Republic - Anticipating a Best Seller

Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) is perhaps the most anticipated Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing Game (MMORPG) we've seen in years.

Its developers entreat us:

"Explore an age thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader when war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy."

In brief, the background story is as follows:

After centuries of relative peace, the Sith have returned from 'deep space' Catching the Republic and the Jedi Order by surprise, the Sith sacked the republican capital of Coruscant. A disadvantageous treaty has been signed, and the Jedi have relocated their council their home-world of Typhon. The galaxy is on a 'knife-edge': the peace treaty is fragile; and skirmishes are common. It is into this arena that players will step. Whether to support the Sith, or the Republic - or simply to serve themselves - that is the choice facing players.

Regardless of which choice they make, gamers around the world are in expectation of an expansive and deep role-playing experience.

Developers, Bioware have proclaimed that whichever class players choose, the game will be story-driven: with unique storylines for each class, and moral challenges which affect story-line and character development.

So far only two classes have been revealed at the official SWTOR website: the Trooper and Bounty Hunter classes. But in an exclusive interview with Gamespot, the developers have confirmed another class: 'the Smuggler'.

Ultimately, there are expected to be eight classes: two of which will most likely include the Jedi and the Sith.

Each class choice is expected to provide a distinctive experience.

The Troopers are to be the Galactic Republic's finest: elite soldiers with access to advanced heavy weaponry, grenades and "almost impenetrable armour". While based on the 'clone troopers' and 'storm troopers' of the Star Wars movies, the SWTOR Trooper class are 'the best': and are not to be underestimated.

Streaming video at the SWTOR website also feature Troopers' use of "sticky grenades": which upon attaching themselves to an enemy, appear impossible to evade.

(Further: in breaking news from Bioware, Troopers are now expected to enjoy a range of "morale themed party buffs." (a very important development with regards to game balance) Hopefully we'll hear more of this soon.)

And as with other classes, the Trooper class will confront tough moral quandaries in search of victory over a ruthless and callous foe. Will they do whatever is necessary - achieve victory "at any cost"? Or will they adhere to a moral code: but risk defeat?

The 'Bounty Hunter' class, meanwhile, is to provide a 'shadier' and possibly "morally-ambiguous" role-playing experience. Bioware describes the class as "Hunter, seeker, Killer for hire". These men and women spend their lives "on the edge" - their life-paths leading to "a life of infamous glory... or to a quick and ignominious death." "Shifting allegiances, unbeatable odds, and deadly showdowns are common in the occurrences in the life of a Bounty Hunter."

Bounty Hunters also have access to state-of-the-art equipment from the 'black market': wrist rockets, flamers, heavy yet flexible armour. jetpacks. For those wanting to play a "Boba Fett fantasy" this class will surely hold a strong allure.

Finally, there is the Smuggler class. The Smuggler is set to appeal to those with "a Han Solo fantasy".

To date Smugglers have not formally featured as a class at the official SWTOR website. But in an exclusive interview with Gamespot, we are given an 'advance insight' into this intriguing class choice. Crucially, Dallas Dickinson reveals that:

"The smuggler class utilizes a dynamic cover system in combat, which is also a first for the MMO space."

The 'dynamic cover' system includes 'shooting from around corners', and - because of superior initiative - shooting first.

In addition to use of cover, the Smuggler is set to have powerful charismatic force, and is to make use of 'quick thinking'. Further, the Smuggler class provides the choice of whether to take sides "for patriotism" or for "simple profiteering." Possible missions could involve: "contraband, people, lost treasures" - enough for a fully immersive role-playing experience.

Hopefully the class will be more fully 'fleshed out' in the coming weeks.

Weapons, armour, and cover - what kind of choices will we have?

There are other issues, though, that face Bioware in developing this title: and we will consider some of them now.

The Smuggler class's use of cover will be a critical aspect of the game. Clearly developers are searching for 'signature' abilities which define each class. But while use of cover could comprise a critical skill for Smugglers - surely such tactics should not be restricted to them only.

Assuming advanced training, surely Troopers should also be able to take advantage of cover. This should be a 'feat' - available to all classes: but one in which certain classes (eg: the Smugglers, Troopers) enjoy bonuses in its acquisition and application.

Use of cover - and related actions - might also involve tactical questions not yet explored in 'developer dispatches' from Bioware.

While the Trooper's armour may have a significant power to reflect, absorb or otherwise neutralise attacks which hit; dodge and evasion skills, and use of cover could prevent attacking from making contact in the first place.

And in addition to this, all players ought be able to lay on the ground: to minimise the area vulnerable to attack - and provide a smaller target.

Such tactical choices could provide depth to the game-play experience: and a more satisfying and authentic gaming experience.

Availability of a wide range of grenade types could also provide greater tactical choice to the Trooper class - and possibly others capable of using such weaponry.. Already we have the 'sticky' high explosive grenades: but what of electronic grenades to short-circuit droids; or what about 'flash' grenades (blinding) or stun grenades? Grenades hold potentially critical tactical importance - as they may be able to overcome the enemy's use of cover - because of blast radius...

And for all classes there needs to be a wide variety of weapons - not just heavy weapons.

Pistols and light rifles could be less cumbersome - easier to use 'from around corners' (especially useful for Smugglers) - or to wield while laying on the ground. Heavier weapons, meanwhile, might be more difficult to use from a position of cover. Some might even 'overheat' if over-used.

Heavy weapons might also have recoil (affecting accuracy depending on the players' skill and strength); or because they are cumbersome may affect agility/dodge/stealth. (But if so expect this to me 'made up for' by 'packing an incredible punch!') Finally, sniper rifles might involve slow reloads, but may have no problem with overheating, while providing excellent criticals, accuracy and range.

Armour type should also be of critical importance. Some heavy armour should be cumbersome, incurring penalties to agility/dodge and stealth abilities. Advanced (maybe experimental) armour may at least partly overcome this. And maybe some light armour could include stealth functions. Some suits of power armour may boost strength and melee potency. Some may enhance speed. Others could absorb certain energy types.

Importantly: whether for armour, or lightsabers, or other weapons: there needs to be maximum scope for customisation. Think, here, of Mass Effect, and the Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) series: customised plates, scopes, crystals, ammunition, ad infinitum. A great variety, here, is what I think players will want.

Other skills

There are many other possible dimensions to the game also - that so far have not received much attention. Let's not underestimate skills such as stealth, dodge/evasion, healing, ranged and melee critical hits, and the influence of charisma and diplomacy... Smugglers, in particular, could specialise in some of these areas - increasing their appeal and versatility - even if use of cover is not their exclusive domain.

Other possible skills could include: disarming or laying down traps, opening electronic doors, and hacking into computer systems.

Perhaps there may even be scope to incorporate 'mini-games' associated with some of these skills - providing greater depth and variability of game-play. Indeed: this could be but 'the tip of the iceberg'.

What about factions and moral choice?

Most modern MMORPGS today involve factional and/or political affiliation choices - and hopefully SWTOR will expand and improve on this. The developers have trumpeted the core role of ethical choices for each player and each class. Players will desire for this will be implemented in as credible manner as possible.

Some classes seem relatively 'clear cut' on the surface - such as the Trooper. But even here - as recognised earlier - there will be morally ambiguous decisions to be made - where 'right' and 'wrong' are not clear cut. (eg: the use of physical threat to extract information from an enemy when there are many lives at stake)

Meanwhile: the Bounty Hunter and Smuggler classes should provide relative flexibility in terms of affiliations and allegiances. Ultimately, some will 'follow the flow of credits'. Others may be won over by their 'better angels' - their consciences - to work only for the Republic -and fight against the Sith.

Depending on the storylines Bioware develops -even a Jedi might turn to darkness; or a Sith 'to the light'. (It has been done before - and thus shouldn't be too surprising)

But assuming there are to be hard moral choices - what effect does this have on the game? Assuming there is real flexibility in affiliation and advancement of the story line: how will this flexibility be handled? The system of KOTOR I & II ought be reflected upon here. In rewarding extremes of benign and malicious behaviour, moral 'shades of grey' were excluded.

The difficulty is in allowing for 'shades of grey' while discouraging inconsistent, erratic and seemingly senseless changes of behaviour. 'Extremes' ought not be rewarded on principle: but genuine 'role-playing' in the advancement of the story ought be rewarding in of itself. This is an important issue for discussion: raising questions that Bioware ought address sooner rather than later.

Keeping them coming back for more...

Much has been said of the real choice offered to players: and the 'unique' gaming experiences that are being planned for each class. That said, the developers must be aiming for an immersive gaming experience - the sort that will keep players 'coming back for more'.

Instead of subscribing for a month or two and 'burning out' - the developers will want to provide a product that provides satisfaction over 'the long term.' Unique class story lines are part of this challenge - but even 'maxing out' in one class, and finishing the storyline of one class - should at least take several months.

Some have suggested a cap of 'level 10': others of "level 50"! Most importantly, though - there needs to be plenty of scope for multiple branching storylines with real options for character development; a gripping and evolving main story-line - where the world changes with the actions of the various player factions; and enjoyable and challenging PvP combat.

Critically: Don't let it turn into another grind: 'camping out for spawns' with little story or substantial content. (thankfully this doesn't look likely)

Also importantly: the developers need to get the balance right with regard to character advancement. There must always be another accomplishment 'within reach' - 'over the next horizon'. And yet 'levelling up' - or gaining skills in between levels - needs to be a real achievement too.

A three hour gaming session ought be able to provide some kind of advancement in skills - at least at the lower and middle ranged levels. And if advancement at higher levels is more challenging - how then to keep high level players involved? What motivation will there be to keep them playing? Hopefully all these issues will be addressed in the coming months...

Conclusion

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a game of enormous promise. Because it is likely to be in competition with 'Star Trek Online' and 'Stargate Worlds' - it will have to deliver to players on an ongoing basis to achieve the market share its publishers must be aiming for.

The formal announcement of the Jedi and Sith classes will be eagerly anticipated: and as the picture emerges - as to what the final product will be - we will be there.
