How the Military Prepares the Soldiers For War and the Equipment They Use to Keep Them Safe

Since the terrorist attacks that happened on September 11th, our troops have been fighting in the Middle East. Fighting a war, obviously is a very scary thing and something that the military takes very seriously. Although thousands of lives have been lost, safety is a primary concern and the products and the tools that help our troops perform their duties as well as to remain safe are of utmost importance. This article will touch on some of those things that they need to be safe such as night vision goggles, flight helmets, bullet proof vests, detection devices for land mines, and industrial hummer vehicles.

When soldiers head over to Iraq and Afghanistan for their tour of duty, all of their friends and family members worry horribly that they may never see that person again and that they will not get out of the war alive. This is a very realistic worry as a few thousands soldiers of ours have now been killed in the Middle East conflict over the years. The military works hard to train all of their soldiers extensively before they head over to the war zone and to prepare them for what they may encounter.

Being physically and mentally prepared, however, is only going to help them out so much as the proper equipment and safety items can help save their lives and aid their missions too. Much of what the soldiers do happens at night which obviously makes it a bit more dangerous than if they were flying their missions during the daylight hours. A lot of the actual combat occurs in the total darkness so things to aid in seeing in the dark is essential. The military uses night vision goggles and equipment to be able to see things that their natural eyes can not. This is an imperative piece of equipment. Also, many of the flight missions happen in helicopters and keeping the pilots safe especially if they are shot down is important and wearing flight helmets is just one of the things that has been shown to save some lives.

If the soldiers are exploring unknown territory or patrolling the streets by foot, wearing bullet proof vests and clothing is necessary. We often see these soldiers in the news or in photos with their camouflage clothing and their large guns and bullet proof equipment. Also, land mines are a huge problem in the Middle East and detection devices are needed for the soldiers safety too. When they are not on foot they are traveling by ground in industrial tank like vehicles that are hummers to deflect bullets and other oncoming threats. All of these things are a part of war.

Hopefully, the war will end soon and people will not have to worry about their loves ones fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. The military does everything they can to prepare these young men and women for the war conditions and hopefully that will help to save some lives that may have otherwise been lost.

These are great Knives! I got them within a week of ordering them.

The Knives: They look really cool and have a "barbed" shape. They didn't really come sharp but they don't need to be they just need a good pointy tip, which these have. The Blade if actualy only about 2 and a half inches. But that provides lots of room for your hand. These aren't really "Stainless" Steel but they resist scratching, And have been dropped on concrete, rock and asphalt and are fine. The holes on the handle make for a good measuring system as far as where to put your fingers. They are weighted perfectly! and can be balanced on your fingertip (if you have a steady hand).

The Harness: The Harness is made from light-weight smokey smelling plastic. Fairly cheap and is not held together very well. But with a few modifacations can become a thigh sheath. It has a slightly curved shape which helps. If done properly it provides a easly reachable (and cool looking) sheath. The knives are held in the sheath by small magnets, which aren't that strong. Overall the sheath stinks, But the nylon holsters for the mini-mag flashlights, if pressed flat make an excelent sheath if you need to cary just one at a time. And can be easly put into a pocket or purse or be strapped to a calf or forearm.

These are great knives and I would recomend them to anyone who is looking for a good set of knives to start this exciting Hobby with. Or has a friend who just like sharp objects.

Australian Property Market on a Knife-Edge

Predicting the future of the property market is always fraught with risk, but the current global financial crisis is making the task virtually impossible.

The Australian media are full of conflicting opinions from property experts on where the market is headed, making it even harder for the average home owner or investor to plan for the future. Real estate markets in most parts of the USA have taken a hammering over the last two years, and the big question in Australia is: will the same thing happen here?

On the positive side, there are several crucial differences between the US and Australian property markets:

Housing Supply

Many areas of the US housing market such as Phoenix Arizona are significantly over-supplied with homes. In other words, many more homes were built than each area's regular demand. The overhang of unsold new properties has been added to by the significant number of foreclosure properties on the market, leading to sometimes dramatic price reductions.

By contrast Australia has, according to property experts, been building fewer homes than the normal demand would dictate. This has primarily been a result of planning restrictions, escalating building costs, and the growing tendency of local government to meet budgetary demands through huge levies on developers rather than increased local taxes/rates for existing homeowners (read: voters).

The resulting shortage of homes is evidenced by the very low vacancy levels in the rental markets in all major cities, accompanied by rising rents. Together with the cost of new homes being significantly higher than the existing housing stock, these factors have underpinned the Australian property market.

Lending Rules

Jingle mail - where homeowners can no longer afford the repayments on their house and mail the keys back to the lender - has become common in the US in recent times. Most (but not all) US mortgages are non-recourse, in that the loan is secured solely against the property and there is no opportunity for the lender to get their hands on the borrower's income or assets. Once the keys are handed back, the liability of the borrower is essentially over.

This mortgage structure has been at the heart of the sub-prime mortgage crisis - there has been no pressure on the lenders to verify the borrower's ability to repay the mortgage, and no liability on the part of the borrower to continue repayments if the going gets tough, or a property market correction leads to the home being worth less than the mortgage.

In Australia, the loan liability rests with the borrower, and the lender can pursue the borrower's income and assets should repayments not be kept up to date. This places much more responsibility on the borrower to organise their affairs to ensure that they can meet their repayments.

Additionally, Australian consumer legislation puts considerable onus on the lender to assess the borrower's ability to meet their loan obligations prior to approving a mortgage. Over the last 5 or 6 years, low-documentation loans (where the level of loan servicing proof has been lower than for standard mortgages) have grown in popularity, but these are still significantly more secure than the sub-prime loans on the US.

As a result, the mortgage default rate in Australia is only around the 1% mark in 2008, which is about average for the last decade or so.

Other Factors

Other positives for the property market include strong immigration inflows, an economy growing at a significant (albeit slowing) pace, historically low unemployment, and a growing trade surplus.

The Downside

Despite the above positive factors, the outlook for real estate is far from rosy.

The elephant in the room of course is the current global financial crisis. Frozen credit markets and downward-spiralling stock markets do not bode well for any asset class in the near future. Property however, is particularly vulnerable in Australia, with massive mortgage debt a millstone around consumers' necks. Home affordability is at a record low, as prices over recent years have been ratcheted up by a public which thought price appreciation would go on forever.

And if efforts to loosen up credit both here and overseas do not work - and work soon - it is difficult to see any other outcome than falling house prices. No matter what the demand side of the equation looks like, if you can't borrow money then you can't buy a house.

Anecdotal evidence from real estate agents suggests that prices have already started softening in many areas. Whether this softness gains momentum will depend on how the various factors above play out in the coming months.

On Communicating Fencing Fundamentals

As a coach, have you ever wondered why your fencing students seem not to be able to understand how all of the parts of their technique and tactics tie together into one package? Even students who seem otherwise gifted will somehow seem to miss the main point. I think it is because we teach technique, and we teach tactics, and we forget to teach the underlying truth.

Classical fencers make a big point about how their fencing is guided by the concept of "hit without being hit." This sounds very nice, but it actually never was true. Modern martial artists will tell you that in a knife fight you have to accept the probability that, even if you win, you will get cut. Certainly dueling was not a clean, injury free process in its early days. The number of duels fought in the 1600 and 1700s between reasonably well matched opponents in which one emerged completely unscathed has not been recorded, but there are enough cases in which all of the skilled combatants, sometimes as many as 6, were seriously wounded or killed by multiple hits to question the truth of hit without being hit. And in the late 1800s and early 1900s we see fencing champions and masters, Nadi and Terrone being examples, being wounded in the duels they fought. A duel always meant that you could expect to lose blood.

That suggests that a more correct way to describe fencing is to "hit the opponent first as often as you can, and get hit as few times as possible." It is a longer fundamental statement, but a more realistic, more historically accurate, and more achievable one. Of course, first has to be understood in right of way terms in foil, in right of way and lockout time in sabre, and simply first in epee. This statement also is more useful in teaching the tactical reality that every hit counts, even in defeat, in competitions where indicators are in play.

Fencing is a balance of offense and defense. Offense is how we hit our opponent, whether by pure offensive action, by offensive action after a defensive action (the parry-riposte sequence), or by counteroffensive action (stop hits and countertime actions). Defense is how we keep from being hit, either by blade action or by footwork. We can only hit the opponent by offense or counteroffense, and we keep from being hit by defense. As obvious as this is to us as coaches, it is not obvious to all fencers, and far from obvious to beginners who have not learned the terminology, much less the underlying theory.

If the essence of fencing is to "hit the opponent first as often as you can, and get hit as few times as possible," it seems reasonable to simplify offense and defense to

... "See the target, hit the target."

This communicates the reality that we have to (1) identify a target, and (2) guide our action to hit that target. The target may be as simple as hitting an opening line in an inattentive opponent, or it may be as complex as having to create an opening through preparatory actions. But, if we do not have a target in mind, we will be hard pressed to select an appropriate technique and control the blade to the hit.

... "See the threat, block the threat."

Similarly, this statement communicates that we have to recognize the opponent's threat, whether that threat is potential (for example, the blade position of a parry) or in progress. We then have to select an appropriate action to deny that threat the opportunity to hit.

And the two phrases together address the reality that most actions have both offensive and defensive characteristics. An attack on the opponent's preparation is seeing the target and hitting it, but it is also blocking the threat by preempting it. Similarly a successful disengage attack in epee against the torso must either be blindingly fast or must close the line with opposition to prevent the stop hit, thereby blocking the threat.

Although these seem simplistic, in reality many fencers attack blindly without having a target in sight or in mind - they attack because they think should attack. Why else do fencers attack into closed lines? Similarly, many fencers defend without recognizing the true nature of the threat. Every coach can probably point to examples of this behavior in fencers who have been fencing for more than one season. That suggests these three statements may be useful in communicating truths to your students.

Days passed by. Humairah happened to trace her dad's hidden identity. Her parents wanted her to marry Hafiz's Brother-in-law in Pakistan. They insisted her to wear chador, while going out. Meanwhile Karthik's parents left to New York to stay with their daughter. Vaishnavi's mother passed away. Vaishnavi decided to marry a Malaysian Tamil. Karthik found a new job in his home town, Chennai in India. Humairah cheated her parents and fled to India with her friends' assistance. All this happened within a month's time.

It's a chill summer in Chennai, unusually. The hottest month incurred a record rainfall. Karthik was stunned. "Hum, what have you done? We cannot rationalize all our decisions. You should have spoken with your parents anyway."

"Karthik, you don't know. My dad is sponsoring terrorism and the bridegroom they selected is an international terrorist. My parents knew that. My dad argues that revenge is a religious duty and revenge against India is special because he lost 38 of his relatives in partition violence. He is originally an Indian , Karthik.

"All of us are humans first", replied Karthik.

"Wake him up Uma, its urgent.", Cried Karthik.

Sadasivam came in to the line little later.

"How are you? What is it, Karthik?"

"Appa, I've decided to marry."

"What? We will speak in the morning.," said a shocked Sadasivam.

Karthik pleaded him "Appa, I love a girl and she's here."

"Don't tell me you are going to marry that 'iyengar' girl, Vaishnavi" commanded casist Sadasivam.

"No dad. Not Vaishu. This is Humairah from London." Said a tensed Karthik.

"Muslim?" asked Sadasivam in a sarcastic voice.

"Yes" said Karthik.

"My son is dead. Leave my house immediately." Shouted Sadasivam and banged the phone.

Humairah standing near Karthik understood the situation.

"We will marry." said Karthik.

Humairah kissed him on the forehead holding his shoulders with her hands.

I am really impressed with the design of this knife. It is extremely light weight, petite, sophisticated, yet still comfortable to use with great effect. It fits well in my hand, and is incredibly sharp. As shown in the picture, I have the serrated version. It was a birthday present and i had asked for the straight edged version because I wasnt sure what I could cut effectively with such a small serrated blade. I decided to try it out on another birthday present, a pair of nice headphones that came in that really tough plastic that electronics always come in. I barely inserted the tip and traced around the headphones with such ease, I lost all doubt immediately. The tip is 2-3 centimeters of straight blade, but is not as sharp as the edge "between the sheepsfoot"(the big spaces in the serrated portion of the blade). Since my birthday, i have kept my cricket with me everywhere, except school. This morning, I needed to clip my toenails, but I had lost the clippers. So I thought for a moment.... and I decided to gently use the knife do do the dirty work (no pun intended). It actually worked! The cricket is so sharp yet fine and easy to control, that cutting my nails was easy. As you can clearly deduce from this realy life experience, This knife is worth the slightly high price. I also use the cricket as a money clip, which looks nice and works well. The pocket clip easily holds 1-5 bills, as well as keeps the knife in my pocket. The lock is sturdy, and the only downside is that it is hard to pull off the sawing motion with this knife. Of course, if I had wanted a saw, i would have gotten a saw. The cricket is a great everyday knife, but it is not meant to tackle hard jobs. Its great for opening boxes, cutting off itchy shirt tags etc etc. I give it 5 stars for design, funtion, and aesthetics.

Rambo 1st Blood Part II Knife Review

The recent release of the new series of Rambo Knives by Master Cutlery has been an incredible success. Still it has been hard for customers to find out specific details on each of these special knives. Whether you refer to them as Rambo Knives, Rambo Bowie Knives or Rambo Survival Knives everyone knows what you are talking about.

It is hard for me to contain my excitement for this recent series of Rambo knives from Master Cutlery. In the interest of full disclosure, I do sell these knives on the Internet.
To help put my fascination with these knives in perspective, I have access to over 100 brands of knives and this is the first series where I am seriously looking at collecting each knife in the series.

These Rambo knives have almost a cult following due to the success of the movies and the image that is portrayed for the Rambo Knife. Even with all the demand for these Rambo Knives there still seems to be a lack of detailed information available on these knives available on the Internet. Sure you can get the standard specs on the various Rambo knives but we have had several requests from customers for more specific information.

Here we will review the Rambo 1st Blood Part II Knife from the Master Cutlery series.

Rambo 1st Blood Part II Knife - Numbered, Signature series: This is a heavy bladed knife. The blade is 1 7/8th inches wide, almost a 1/4 inch thick and 10 inches long. The blade spine features a double row of saw teeth; each row is about 3/32nds of an inch wide. The tips of these teeth look like and feel like the teeth on a chain saw. The saw teeth go to a single row on the clip point portion of the blade. There are only 5000 of these knives being produced and each blade is stamped Rambo First Blood Part II, has the John Rambo signature and is numbered.

The hilt of the Rambo 1st Blood Part II bowie knife has a Phillips screwdriver tip on one side and a standard screw driver tip on the other. The black cord wrapped handle is very comfortable in your hand and will absorb moisture off you hand to help you keep a better grip when you are sweating or it is raining. The handle is hollow and had a removable threaded end cap that seals tight with a rubber grommet. In the handle there is a small re-sealable plastic vial that contains matches, a fishing rig and razor blade.

The removable end cap has a hole to hook a lanyard to. The exposed end of the end cap is designed with a blunt tip that can be used as an impact weapon, to break glass or pound with. From the look and weight of the end cap it appears to be aluminum.

This Rambo 1st Blood Part II Survival Knife comes with a black leather sheath with a leg tie. The sheath is stamped Rambo 1st Blood Part II and with the John Rambo signature. The belt loop is large enough to accommodate belts up to 3 1/4 inches wide.

Each Rambo 1st Blood Part II Knife comes with a certificate of authenticity.

The Role Of The Youth Athlete

The Youth Athlete has many responsibilities and duties as they participate in their sport. They have responsibilities to themselves and their parents, their teammates, their coaches, their opponents, and the referees.

In order for an athlete to enjoy the positive benefits of participating in youth sports, their responsibilities must first be clearly defined and understood. These responsibilities should be communicated from the coach to the athletes and their parents before the season gets under way. When their responsibilities are clearly defined, the youth athlete is much more willing to accept and carry these out throughout the season.

9. The youth athlete should compliment their teammates and opponents on their good performances.

10. The youth athlete should return to playing after an injury is completely treated and healed.

I got one for me and one for my wife and neither came warped. The handles are very comfortable and the parts that people complained about are smoother on the new ones. Well I am quite happy with this product I too had problems with the pins like others had (cut off a piece from a pen refill & fit right in) & end up stripping the screws when I tightened it ( plan to get new ones) but its a step up from what I was using before ( one of those Spyderco BaliYo Red/White/Blue Made in USA YUS100 pens) then my girl got me a real one & after I cut myself pretty bad (a few times) I saw this & I gotta say besides having to do a bit of modification to it Im extremely happy with this product

Defend Yourself! You Have 2 Choices When it Comes to Self Defense - A Chance, Or No Chance at All!

When it comes to self defense, there are basically 2 perspectives. On the one hand, you have the folks who believe that you should learn to defend yourself. On the other, you have those who believe that it will never happen to them. But, in a self defense situation, regardless of whether or not you believe that it will ever happen to you, there is the reality of the situation.

But, before I talk about this reality, I should probably tell you why I think that I'm qualified to do so. That way, you can come away from reading this article with more than one guy's opinion among many.

You see, I used to be a police officer.

And I worked as everything from a uniformed patrolman to an undercover black market and drug suppression investigator. I have even worked special duty in executive security - as a body guard.

What that means is that I have not only seen violence, but I have experienced it first-hand. My experience with violence has been from both sides of the fence - both as a witness to the effects of violence on the victims that I tried to help, and as the target of violence from everyone from the street criminal to the battered housewife-turned-attacker when we had to take her abusive husband into custody - and everything in between.

Add this to my years of growing up in the inner-city, watching and being the target of violence - the reason I became a cop in the first place - and you can see that I have more than ideas and beliefs about the subject.

Now, I'm not telling you these things to impress you. I'm telling you these things to impress upon you two very important things:

First - I know what I'm talking about. And...

Second - Violence is not something that happens to "other people."

And, while there were people that I've met who became the victims of attacks because of what they did, who they associated with, or even because they were violent themselves, by and large, the vast number of victims that I met in the line of duty all had one thing in common.

Do you know what that was?

It was the belief that "it wouldn't happen to them."

So, they were unprepared when the violence erupted.

Does this mean that all untrained or unprepared targets of violence lost? Probably not. But it has been my experience that those who survived, did something that martial artists and self defense students train to be able to do. And, while not everyone that I encountered who studied martial arts or self defense was successful, most of them did this thing that I'm alluding to.

Now, you might think that I was going to say that the 2 choices that you had were to study self defense or not study. But, in reality, that's not it at all.

The reason I say that isn't it is because...

...there are a ton of people who supposedly "study" self defense, when what they really do is read and maybe watch videos about it. Saying you study self defense would be like saying you "study" quantum physics because you read a book on the subject!

And remember, I said earlier that some of those who survived an attack had never studied martial arts or self defense before - and that some martial artists failed, not because of lack of training, but because...

They failed to act!

And this is the choice that will give you at least a chance to defend yourself - regardless of your skill level. This is the reality of the situation that I mentioned earlier.

It isn't what belt you have, or how many techniques you know - although having well-developed skills and the tactical knowledge and strategic thinking that will allow you to use them effectively will give you one hell of an advantage over the guy who knows nothing...

It is your ability to think and act under pressure - in the moment when the shit is hitting the fan - that will determine your fate, destiny, or whatever you want to call it.

Because, if you fail to act - even if you're a 10th degree Ninja black belt - you will have no chance at all!
