Knife Rust Prevention Secrets

Developing rust on a knife after only a week can be a very frustrating occurrence. Believe it or not, rust can and will develop in such a short period of time even on a stainless steel knife! In this article I will share with the reader some of the best practices for knife owners to use on a daily basis to prevent rust and corrosion.

Knives that are made from high carbon steel are typically harder than stainless steel and will stay sharp for a considerably longer period of time. The high carbon content gives knifes this ability but also makes it much more prone to rust. Many hunters prefer to have a knife made from high carbon steel because of the fact that they hold their edge longer than a stainless steel knife and they require less sharpening. It is important to remember to clean and dry the blade of your knife (high carbon or stainless) very thoroughly immediately after skinning an animal. Leaving blood or moisture on the blade of your knife will cause rust and/or permanent staining that is not only less appealing to the eye, but can spread like a disease throughout the knife and eventually ruin it. It is also important that your knife is dry before you put it away in your sheath or knife holder.

Many knife owners' first instinct when they are finished using their knife is to store it in the sheath. It is made to hold the knife after all, right? The truth of the matter is that leaving your knife in its sheath for long periods of time will most likely cause it to rust. This is because moisture develops inside the sheath and sits on the knife blade for a period of time and causes corrosion.

A helpful way to prevent rust from forming on your favorite high carbon knifes is to apply a light coat of non-detergent based oil to the blade. Your local hardware store should be able to help you with your selection. Some knife owners use vegetable oil on their blades but I would not recommend this practice as it can eventually ferment. I suggest either using 3-in-1 oil or most gun oils when it comes to lubricating your high carbon knife. Again, be sure to select something that does not have any acid or other substance that could eat away at your blade.

Keep in mind that some knife sheaths have steel or other metal on them that can rust as well! I recommend using the same oil and rust prevention techniques with these parts of your sheaths as you do with your knife.

Try to think of all of the innovative ideas that you and your family encounter every day. You have probably looked at some of them and thought, "Wow, why didn't I think of that?" Stainless Steel Knives - Knife Maker's Dilemma!

Stainless steel knife blades are considered a compromise by some knife making or bladesmith enthusiasts. Knife making is a hobby that can be enjoyed by young and old. Building a homemade knife is a creative and fun project. A homemade knife can be easily made from an old hand saw, or an old circular saw blade. The tempered steel will create a fine old fashioned knife. This circular saw blade is typically a tool steel with a high carbon content. Custom knives made from high carbon steel are typically easier to maintain a very sharp edge.

Imagine creating with your own hands, a kitchen knife that is so sharp that you could cut the tomato slices "too" thin. All you need is your own labor, sweat, tears, and perhaps a little blood.

Making a fine homemade knife is a work of patience. It is both an art and a science. A good knife is a lot of hard work, dedication to precision craftsmanship, and requires a person to understand the science of metallurgy, and the art of blacksmithing and design.

So, why not stainless steel alloys? Stainless steel may be a good option! There are many stainless alloys with varying properties that will enhance a custom knife. The biggest reason that many custom knife makers are beginning to embrace a stainless alloy, is the age old problem of rust.

Stainless steel is designated as such if it has greater than 13% chromium. Having said that, the ASM Metals Handbook says that it only must be greater than 10%. This difference is probably a reference to "free" or available chromium.

Carbon and stainless steels are both acceptable if properly alloyed. The high carbon steels are typically the steels that are forged. They can be differentially tempered. This property gives the knife maker more options. He can better control the hardness of the cutting edge, and still have a tough knife with a springy back.

But... having said this, consider some of the more popular stainless alloys. The 440 series, particularly 440C, and the Japanese ATS-34 stainless alloy. Also, stainless alloys that have a high vanadium content are more wear resistant and hold an edge better, but are typically harder to work.

Knives, for an accomplished knife maker take anywhere from a few hours for a small utility knife to several months for other, fancier knives. They are an investment and can last a lifetime. Custom knives are often set apart by the exotic materials used.

Knives have always been around in one form or another. When you grip the handle of a great knife, the goal is to have that knife perform as an extension of your arm.

There has probably been at least as many knives made by individual knife makers, working alone, down through history, as have been made by all the factories now making knives.

Regular sharpening and cleaning of a knife will keep it looking great, working well and increase its life. Whether stainless, or high carbon, or something in between, making a custom knife can be an extremely satisfying endeavor.

The Role of the Navy in the Cuban Missile Crisis

In the fall of 1962, the world was pushed to the brink of a global nuclear war as the Soviet Union and United States underwent a massive power struggle. As part of the arms race, Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev decided the USSR needed to correct a strategic imbalance of nuclear weapon deployment locations. He ordered that medium and intermediate range ballistic missiles be placed in Cuba and targeted at high value locations within the United States.

Before the secret deployment was completed, the United States intelligence services learned of the operation. In what was to become known as the Cuban Missile Crisis, President Kennedy brought the full force of the US Government and Military to bear on this problem and by an overwhelming show of force, caused the Soviets to back down and remove both the missiles and all other offensive weapons from Cuba.

A crucial component of the success of JFKs pressure was the US Navy.The Navy applied overwhelming sea and air might in a cordon around Cuba, essentially choking off all sea and air transportation to and from Cuba. Naval destroyers, frigates and radar picket ships constantly patrolled the waters around Cuba while Naval aerial photographic and patrol aircraft performed constant fly-bys of Cuba to monitor the situation at the nuclear weapon sites.

Without a powerful and prepared Naval force, this strategy would not have been available to the US and its allied. And the final result of the Cuban Missile Crisis could have been much different. This strategy of "controlling the seas" proved so effective, it has been used to great effect many times since then in preventing the escalation of hostilities in many hot spots around the world.

The blockade proved more than Khrushchev's missile and bomber forces could handle and was feced with a tough decision: either place his country in great peril or find a way to unravel the situation. Fortunately for Khrushchev, Kennedy had a peaceful agenda in spite of the overwhelming military force he brought to bear. By showing Khrushchev the might of the US and allied military forces arrayed against his country but not pushing the issue of the combined might against his country, he was given a way to peacefully disengage from this, the most serious Cold War confrontation. Had actual forced been employed, rather than just a show of massive force readiness, the situation could have turned out much differently to the detriment of the entire world. In this, the world owes a great debt of gratitude to the cool decision making of John F Kennedy and his advisors and military staff.

Perhaps the greatest lesson to be learned from the Cuban Missile Crisis is that there are multiple ways to effect an outcome with the military - and the use of force is not always the best use of the armed forced.

Bushcraft Fire Starting

Using the bow-drill method

Before you start your bushcraft fire you will need to collect some dry wood, leaves and foliage from the surrounding area to use as fuel for your campfire. Keep these items as dry as possible. To light a bushcraft fire you will need to create friction. Taking to sticks of wood and rubbing them together will create friction, but this will take far to long to light any campfire. One of the better alternatives for lighting your bushcraft fire is the bow-drill method. To make a bushcraft fire using the bow-drill method you will need to collect the following items from the surrounding area: -

o 1 X 8" long stick (drill) - hardwood
o 1 x 24" long stick (sturdy sapling capable of bending into a bow)
o 1 x flat stone (approx. 3" round with small indent) or wood with notch in middle.
o 1 x flat peace of wood approx. 12" long and 4" wide
o 1 x Length of Para cord or bootlace.
o Tinder such as Maya dust or cotton wool

1. Take the 8" stick (drill) and sharpen one end to a point like a pencil then round of the other end.
2. Take the 24" sapling stick and fix the bootlace to one end.
3. Twist the bootlace once around the dowel stick, tie the remaining end of bootlace to the other end of
sapling stick to form a bow.
4. Next take the flat peace of wood approx. 12" long and 4" wide and make a small notch on the side
with your bushcraft knife. The rounded end of the drill will sit onto this notch.
5. Place the flat peace of wood on to level ground and place tinder into and around the notch.
6. Whilst kneeling on one knee hold the wood in position with your other boot.
7. Hold the bow and drill in one hand with rounded end of drill placed into the notch.
8. Place the indented stone onto the pointed end of the drill and apply downward pressure.
9. Slowly use a sawing motion, moving the bow back and forth allowing the drill to spin and generate friction, which in turn will create heat and then fire. If the drill is not moving freely release downward pressure slightly.
10. You will need to increase speed until the tinder begins to smoulder.

When you have a smouldering bushcraft fire, you can start to slowly add the dry wood, leaves and foliage. Do not add too much until you are sure your buscraft fire is going well. Remember to keep a stock of wood near by to keep adding to you campfire.

Hunters Everywhere Need To Be Scent Free And Eliminate Their Odor

Hiding your human scent is one of the most important factors in successful deer hunting.

I am going to discuss the steps you need to make sure that your next hunt is scent free.

The first step to getting really clean and scent-free is taking care of the external portion of your body. Scent elimination starts with the body - internally.
Before your hunting trip you will need to shower with scent free soap and shampoo. Do not use any soap or shampoo that is not scent free.
Then, you need to use some scent free deodorant or just do not use any deodorant at all before your hunt.

In the sections below we will discuss covering scent on your clothing and hunting equipment.

Washing your clothes in a non-scented laundry detergent helps to eliminate all odors in your clothes. This concentrated, unscented detergent should be phosphate-free and contain no UV brighteners. After your clothes are washed you need to dry them. There are some dryer sheets on the market that will give you a scent that is normally found in the woods. After your clothes are dry you need to store them in a container of some kind to keep human scent locked out. Washing your clothing and storing them in scent free containers is one of the easiest and most important steps you can take in the process of scent elimination.

Liner Lock Knives - A History of This Versatile Knife Style

When knives first began to appear as pocket knives, they were developed so that they could virtually fold in half and be able to ride in a secure, hidden location. When the knives were opened, it was usually done with a thumb or another finger, which meant that a person would have to use two hands in order to open up his knife. This is something that worked for many people, but could also be dangerous in the long run.

This is part of why liner lock knives were developed. With these knives, it is possible to open and close the blade with only one hand in a safe manner. The knife was designed by Michael Walker who took what was at one time called the electrician's knife, and made some adjustments to it. The electrician's knife had a button which, when pressed, would open and close. However, it did not lock. Walker changed the older style so that it would lock, which meant a safer sturdier blade.

The liner lock knives that can be found in hunting and fishing equipment stores today are commonly referred to as folding knives. When it is unfolded, it is held open by a leaf spring or lockbar system. The lockbar presses against the bottom of the blade and does not allow it to close until the lockbar is pressed. Then, it closes by itself. It will stay closed until the lockbar is pressed one more time.

This type of hunting knife is useful because it allows you to safely keep your knife closed when not in use, ensuring that no accident occurs. This mechanism creates a way to keep a knife in the house or in a tackle box without worrying about the safety of other people that may be digging in drawers or boxes to retrieve it. The liner lock knife also works to lock the knife open, so that you will not have to worry about the sharp edge falling shut accidentally on unsuspecting fingers or constantly collapsing while you are trying to complete a task.

The liner lock knife also allows you to open and close the blade with one hand. This makes the entire unit much easier and convenient to use. These blades are also made of strong materials, typically steel or titanium, to better withstand rigorous use and the constant movement of the internal mechanism. These materials can also withstand rust and tend to maintain their sharpness better than other metals. With this type of construction, it is reassuring to users that the knife will last.

Although, typically not as accurate, this provides a convenient alternative to carrying a separate rangefinder. Distance measuring is important, but binoculars with a wide field of view allow you to see a larger picture, and keep an eye on several objects at once. For this reason, binoculars for deer hunting might not be the best type that you would use for hunting rabbits.

Binoculars are one of the handiest optical instruments and are necessary for hunters of all experience levels.

This is a nice knife, especially for the price. It fits together very well and you don't have to worry about it falling out of the sheath by accident or anything like that.

The one thing I did was take it to my machine shop and sharpen it, so now it is like a razor blade and it works great now. It was sharp when I got it, but now it is really sharp.

I would buy this knife again if I needed one, so I can rec'mnd one!

Action Steps For Successful Knife Defense

I treat martial arts somewhat as a sport and as a workout routine, but I'd be lying to you if I didn't think it also had some practical utility as a self defense technique, and a lot of the classes I teach focus on self defense, particularly in teaching classes to women and teenagers, in particular mugger defense and knife defense.

Recently, I've had to give some thought into teaching knife defense. Knife defense and martial arts techniques sort of mix, and sort of don't. When we spar in class, we focus - and we focus a lot - on not hurting one another. Knife defense has to take a different approach.

First of all, don't get into knife fights. I don't care how good you are, if you're bare handed and in street clothes, and the other guy has a combat knife, you're at a serious disadvantage. If you can, run away. If you have to give up your wallet to run away, do it. Knife fighting is messy and bloody.

Which leads to the first principle of knife defense: You're going to get cut. Repeat after me: You're going to get cut. Again, I say. You're going to get cut. Be prepared for it, understand that it can happen, and that it will hurt (when you're getting cut) and hurt a lot less immediately after. The trick is to make sure that you do as much damage to your assailant as you can, while turning the least amount of damage to yourself.

The basic knife attack is a thrust or a slash delivered with the forward hand, sort of like a punch. The knife is used to add those critical four inches to your reach. Most people aren't particularly trained at knife fighting, so they use a natural punching motion. The first thing you want to do is interpose your hand, or better yet, the outside of your forearm on the line of attack. Just like you do an inside block or outside block on a punch, you do the same thing against a guy with a knife. Again, you're going to get cut - the key here is to make sure that when you get cut, it's on a part of your body where it won't permanently injure you. Try to block his wrist with yours, barring that, block his blade with your forearm. It'll hurt, but you have to get through the pain to follow up with the punch.

The next technique is to know the range. He's going to attack on a line. You need to be aware of that line and be able to turn tangential to it. Shove his blade off the line while you move in the other direction, and block before you counter-punch. In Western fencing, this would be called a riposte, and it teaches you that the block automatically breaks the line of the attack and lets you counterattack immediately. Use the range - either step in with the punch or step away. If you know how to do a joint lock, by all means do it. Use any techniques you can to A) disable your attacker, and B) run away. Stomp insteps if you can. Punch for the groin, and go for the eyes. You aren't fighting fair, you aren't fighting for points, you're fighting to put the other guy down as fast as possible while avoiding getting hurt.
