How to Choose a Hunting Knife

Is there such a thing as the "perfect hunting knife?" Probably not. But there are many knives on the market that will fill the bill nicely.

But why would you want to listen to me talk about hunting knives. Well, a little about me. I have been an avid hunter for the past 50 years and have hunted big and small game everywhere from Alaska to Florida, Europe and the Pacific. I have hunted, dressed and butchered dove-squirrel-rabbit-turkey-raccoon-fox-coyote-waterfowl-javalina-mule deer-whitetail deer-antelope in the US lower 48, waterfowl-ptarmigan-snowshoe hare-moose-caribou-brown bear in Alaska, waterfowl-wood pigeons-rabbits in the UK, and wild pigs/boar in Guam.

So, how would I choose the best hunting knife for me? First, determine what kind of hunting activities you want to do and whether I. Will you be hunting waterfowl, small game, large game, or a combination of them all? Generally, the larger the game, the larger the knife - but that doesn't mean that a good sharp smaller knife won't work just fine.

Once you determine the kind of hunting you are interested in, you need to ask yourself a few additional questions. Do you want a knife just for hunting? Do you want to carry your knife when you are not hunting?

Now that we have these questions answered, lets talk turkey.

BIG GAME HUNTER: If you are a big game hunter and want a knife specifically for dressing big game, you should consider a fixed blade knife. By definition, these knives are permanently open so they are generally stronger and more reliable. Because the blade is always open, they normally come with a sheath for safe carrying.

But just deciding on a fixed blade knife is not enough - now we have to determine the blade style best suited for your purpose. If this knife is to be strictly used for big game hunting, I recommend a "drop point" blade - a strong curved blade ideal for skinning large animals. This heavy blade design can also be used for gutting, butchering and splitting the pelvis and rib cage. Finally, you may consider a knife with a "gut hook" especially designed for opening the abdomen when field dressing your game.

If you opt for a knife without a gut hook, you may consider a knife with a "clip point" blade - these blades are usually thinner and have a more pointed blade. This would be better for opening the abdomen of your game without cutting too deep and penetrating the intestine.

SMALL GAME HUNTER: If your quarry is small game, anything goes, you can choose a smaller fixed blade knife, a folder, or pocketknife. Personally, I have always opted for a folding knife with a clip point blade (my favorite is my classic Buck Folding Hunter). However, to add flexibility, you may consider a multi-blade pocketknife - the Case Mini Trapper has both a clip point blade and a "spey" blade ideal for skinning small game.

OCCASIONAL HUNTER: For the occasional hunter who hunts "whatever is in season," I recommend a good mid-size folding knife. My favorite has always been the Buck Ranger (112BRS). This classic knife is small enough to effectively deal with small game, but sturdy enough to be just as useful in field dressing/butchering large game. Mine has been my primary knife throughout my hunting career-including, antelope hunting in Wyoming, deer hunting in Utah, Caribou and Brown Bear hunting in Alaska, boar hunting in Guam, and a myriad of small game hunting around the world.

FOR THE HUNTER WHO WANTS TO CARRY A KNIFE DAILY: If you only want one knife to carry for everything, I recommend a multi-blade pocketknife - like the Case "Stockman" or "Trapper" series. I also recommend you check your local knife carry laws - usually knives with blades 3 inches or less are legal - BUT remember all knives are prohibited from many locations including courthouses, some government building, airports, etc. NOTE: I prefer the venerable pocketknife over a folding knife because the former is carried in a pocket while folding knives are usually carried in a sheath visible to all.

IMPORTANT COMMENT: No matter what type or size knife you have, it will not do the job unless it is good and sharp. A knife can lose its edge while dressing the animal, so you need to have a good knife sharpener with you to keep the knife sharp from start to finish. It is not uncommon for a hunter to stop several times while dressing game to sharpen his/her knife. Also, in general, the more expensive the knife, the longer it will hold its edge - but this also means these harder blades take longer to sharpen - so there is some tradeoff here.

SUMMARY: There are literally thousands of knives on the market, so you must prioritize your needs and choose the one (two or even three) that best fill those needs. It is possible to choose one knife for multiple purposes, but most outdoors people have at least 2 with them when they go out. To learn more about knives available go to my web site www.PocketKnivesPro.com [http://www.pocketknivespro.com/] and search on various knives by type, blade type, or brand. Firewood Box - More Than Just a Place to Put the Wood

A firewood box is one tool that should be a part of any home where using the fireplace is the norm. Their practicality, durability, and style options make it an easy choice to add to your home. To help give you an idea of some of its benefits, we have put together.

1. Keeps firewood in one place.
One practical advantage here is they help prevent the risk of tripping over loose firewood. In addition, it creates a specific location for firewood making it easier to inventory existing quantities of wood for determining when another trip to the woodpile is needed.

2. Protects the floor and carpet from dirt and bark.
One of the biggest advantages of using a firewood box is that it helps keep the area cleaner. Many times, wood will have bark and dirt that can easily fall off the wood when it is being placed into the fire. The box is very effective at keeping this dirt in one place that can easily be discarded when the box is empty. This results in less risk of damage to wooden floors, stains on carpet, or scratching other nearby objects like furniture.

3. There are a number of stylish designs.
These boxes offer a great way for adding to the home décor. Many of the designs can have a more basic and rustic look to them whereas others tend to be more elaborate and intricate in design. However, regardless of the design used, the result is consumers should have little difficulty finding a version that will look great in their home.

4. Costs are relatively inexpensive for the value given.
Costs on average range from anywhere from $50 on up to $200. The more standard wooden models will be on the lower end and the higher end models will take on metallic materials offering contemporary or futuristic looks. These prices are more than fair when you consider their durability, style and practicality. You can reasonably expect these boxes to last for many of years.

By keeping these different benefits in mind, it is easy to see why many people have chosen to add firewood boxes to their home.

Spyderco C07S Police Model Knife

Best Deal of Spyderco C07S Police Model Knife and Review

Overall Rating : 4.5

Customer Review

This knife was given as a gift to me over 10 years ago. I've owned two other spyderco knives, a clipit delica and another I can't name. This is my favorite knife, and I've carried it for many years.

The serrated blade is very effective. I've used the knife for everything from opening cans of pineapple juice to opening envelopes. I've cut myself probably 25 times, a few years ago badly, removing about 1" square of skin from my index finger cutting a branch, in one quick slicing move. I was fortunate that it didn't require stitches (although there is scar tissue). I wouldn't hesitate to use it to defend my life against anything I should come across in the woods, as I would feel confident that the amount of cutting force that I can deliver with this as an extension of my arm would rival anything with claws. The clip is better than the other Spyderco knives I've owned, a simple bent metal affair that doesn't snag on my pocket and won't break.

The action on the knife may be my favorite part. It opens and closes so smoothly, depressing the locking mechanism on the back allows the blade to swing back and forth like a pendulum. When it locks open, there is only the tiniest amount of play side-to-side, probably only now after so many years of use.

I've had the serrated blade sharpened many times on a standard bench, sharpening the back side of the blade is quite effective although the "pits" of the serrations don't get sharpened as well from this. This blade stays sharper longer than any other knife I've owned, which has greatly helped in it's longevity.

The knife is visually intimidating, and if it weren't so darned effective I wouldn't carry it because of this. It's just small enough to be legal in my state.

The weight, feel, and action of this knife inspire confidence in it to this day. I've loved knives since I was 5 years old, and have bought dozens of them, but I don't think I've bought more than a few as trinkets since owning this one. There may be better knives out there, maybe even for less money. But I won't find out because I've got this one.

Spyderco C07S Police Model Knife Overview

The Police Model has a David Boye dent cut out of the locking lever allowing you to gorilla grip the knife without accidentally releasing the lock. It's blade is hollow-ground VG-10 and thick at the tip for added strength with a weight-reducing wedge along the spine. This knife is all stainless. The steel clip positions the knife for tip-down pocket carry.

Ka-Bar Dozier Folding Knife Review

When I think of Ka-Bar, the first thing that comes to mind is their widely popular USMC knife. Prized by military personnel around the world for its sharpness and strength, the Ka-Bar USMC has proven itself to be one of the toughest knives on the market.

Now you can get the same Ka-Bar quality in an affordable and compact folding knife. After hearing good things about the Ka-Bar Dozier I decided to get my own. Here are my honest thoughts on the knife:

What I like about the knife:

1. The 3 inch drop-point style blade is a great size for legal everyday carry. It is hollow ground with rust resistant AUS 8A stainless steel. My Dozier came hair shaving sharp right out of the box and stays sharp even after repeated use.

2. Ka-Bar uses a proven lockback mechanism, which gives your fingers excellent protection from lock failure. When the knife is in the open position, just push down the button on the handle to release the blade.

3. Each Dozier comes with a glass-reinforced zytel handle that is not only super-tough, but unaffected by elements such as rain or snow. The checkered pattern gives you an anti-slip grip that feels very nice in your hand.

4. You have options when you buy the Kabar Dozier. It comes with either a drop point or clip point. Each model opens easily with the thumb stud on the blade.

What I didn't like:

I wish that the Ka-Bar Dozier was offered with at least partial serrations. I also wish that the Dozier was available with a longer blade (4-5 inches).

Overall:

With a suggested retail value under $30, you get a lot of bang for your buck with this knife. The Dozier will outperform and outlast many knives with price tags over $100.

You can get a Ka-Bar Dozier for $18 or less at my website http://www.KnifeSell.com

Reviewing Porter Power Tools

You've got to have the right tool for the job. Today, we look the very nice Porter Cable three nailer and compressor combo kit. This kit is a favorite of mine.

While some kits might be lacking in components, the Porter Cable three nailer and compressor combo kit has a finish nailer, brad nailer, stapler, narrow crown stapler, air house, fasteners, nailer oil, manuals and more.

With tools, as you probably know, you really get what you pay for. While the Porter Cable kit normally runs $600, it can be had for 1/3rd of that. Talk about getting bang for your air power tool buck.

The Porter Cable three nailer and compressor combo kit has a 120-volt, 10 amp pump. This baby provides some serious air. The portable 6-gallon air tank can also supply up to 150 psi for all those other air power tools you have. And if you don't have any other air power tools, this is a great reason to go out and get some.

The 16-gauge finish nail gun, with -inch nails, is perfect for casings and moldings. It's versatile. You can switch to 2-1/2-inch nails and secure some baseboard or moldings. It's also good for door frames and jambs. And it's just one feature of this Porter Cable combo kit. It's very nice.

Whether you're working on casings or upholstery or low voltage wiring, the Porter Cable three nailer and compressor combo kit is a must have air power tool as far as I'm concerned. Just make sure you don't pay $600 for it. It can be had for about $230-$300 at the right place.

One thing is for sure, once your buy the Porter Cable three nailer and compressor combo kit, you'll wish you'd done it sooner. One construction company owner, purchased a couple of them and he says they are a great investment. As C. Dwight Barnett said, "All you need is an outlet and an idea."

Oil Painting With a Palette Knife

Impasto is a painting technique in which the artists preferred pigment, which is most often oil painting, is applied so thickly to the canvas that the brush strokes or palette tool marks are clearly visible to the viewer. Only a very small number of artists ever attempt to take this type of technique to the extreme of using only the palette knife, and not the paint brush, to apply their paints to the canvas. It is an even rarer few who master this type of expert technique. It can take an artist of even advanced expertise many years to become proficient using this technique in this way.

Palette knife painting can be accomplished using acrylic paint pigments but oil painting with this type of tool really takes the technique to the highest level. Because of the longer drying time associated with this style of painting the artist is able to go back into the piece and rework sections and add deepening layers of pigment and detail to the fine art piece. Oil painting using the palette knife offers a unique way to add in both varying textures and colorful layers of paint rich in pigment and color while still expressing a rare energy. Fine art painting, because of the freedom it offers the artist, creates dramatic works of art that recreate movement and light in a way that few other painting techniques can hope to match.

Utilizing the palette knife in this unique way when oil painting offers the artist a freedom few can achieve when using the more conventional painting techniques. It frees the hand, as well as the mind, opening the painter's ability to express themselves and allowing them to tap directly into their subconscious. Using the technique in painting for the past forty years, since being a student at the world renowned Vitebsk Art School, and credits palette knife painting with making it possible for the artist to capture his personal optimism and positive life perspective in his fine art landscape paintings, flower paintings, cityscapes, and music paintings which are all available in worldwide art gallery settings, at art auction, and as limited edition art prints. He has become such a well known master of the palette knife oil painting technique that his work is instantly recognizable and never imitable. It is impossible to mistake an palette knife oil painting for anything else.

Today Leonid Afremov has over 4,000 paintings, in 60 galleries all over the world in Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Israel and the U.S. Afremov moved to the U.S. because of his art and his extraordinary ability as a person to help enrich the American Art Culture. Smith & Wesson CK6C Extreme Ops Knife, Camo

Best Deal of Smith & Wesson CK6C Extreme Ops Knife, Camo and Review

Overall Rating : 5.0

Customer Review

This is my favorite knife. I carry it every day, even into church! It is rugged, large, capable, and works the way that I want.

Deployment:
This is very important. All folding knives must be deployed to use. Some are great, some suck! The Extreme OPs is just right!

You see, this knife has a clip. It is designed to clip to the belt. Yes, many other knives do as well. But the Extreme OPs is setup correct for "Right Handed, Rapid Deployment."

How does this work? Imagine the knife clipped to your belt or waist band on your right side waist. The knife is outside, its clip is on the inside. The highest end of the knife is more toward the rear, and the lower is more toward the front. With the Extreme OPs, the blade will be on the upper side, and the blade pivot is at the bottom. These orientations are vital for efficient, and smooth use!

With the knife as described in the above paragraph, it is fully ready for use. Now imagine that your right hand moves up to the knife which is clipped to your waist, and your right hand graps it. Now you slide the entire knife up and back to free the clip from your waist. Next without repositioning your hand in any way, and using "one smooth motion," you articulate your wrist, inside then outside. This motion, after your knife is oiled and broken in, will deploy the blade to the lock point. In half a second your knife has moved from stored on your waist, to being in your hand with the blade deployed and locked.

In an equally efficient way, you can, again without any repositioning, now use your thumb to press against the blade release, and your index finger can push the blade back to the folded condition! This is the best!

Any other orientation would require more actions to deploy, and or fold the blade.

I have 7 S&W Extreme OPs knives in several variations. I carry one every day!

Best Deal of Kershaw Outcast With Fixed Plain D2 Steel Drop Point Blade & Nylon Handle Md: 1079. and Review

Overall Rating : 5.0

One can't help but admire the artistic curves of this well designed knife. I have tested my Outcast in freezing weather, rain drenched forests, coastal ranges, and punishing 120+ degree desert heat. It has stood up to every abuse I have tested it with. The steel is top quality, and the Santoprene handle gives a superior grip. This blade can hold a razor edge all day long. The Outcast draws quickly from the Kydex sheath but will stay locked in place from any carry angle. Despite the relative thin stock of this blade it has outperformed many of the 1/4 inch blades I've worked with. This is one knife that won't let you down!

Leaf Vacuums For Autumn

When autumn rolls around, nothing is more helpful than a leaf vacuum to clean up those leaves in the yard. It is like having a vacuum cleaner used outside for the leaves.

They act like an indoor vacuum cleaner by picking up the leaves and storing them in the vacuum until they're ready to be emptied. Some of the types of models also chop up the leaves and turn them to mulch which makes it even neater to clean up those leaves.

There are leaf vacuums, or catchers, as they are sometimes called, that have as many as three bags attached to them at once to catch the leaves. They may have a mower deck as large as 60" and also have a PTO drive. Many of them actually look just like a lawn mower. Billy Goat makes leaf garden vacuums that look like an old-fashioned lawn mower, but it does the job as a modern style. One large heavy nylon bag is attached to the back and is strong enough to hold many leaves before needing to be emptied. The housing adjusts to four different heights to accommodate the user. A remote hose can also be attached to the vacuum to reach those hard to get places.

The leaf vacuums even come in the hand-held portable models. These are convenient to use, and are usually a combination of a vacuum and a blower. The blower can be used first to blow the leaves all into one spot. Then the vacuum could be utilized to pick up the pile of leaves. This is a neat, efficient way to clean up the leaves in the yard. It is especially practical for those hard to reach places under and between the bushes. This type can also come with a duster bag.

A leaf garden vacuum is a handy, practical machine to have around in the autumn, no matter which model you decide to use. A leaf vacuum mulcher or shredder is a great addition for extra jobs.

Cheese Knives - What to Look For in a Cheese Knife Set

If you take an interest in cheese, a cheese knife set is a must. A typical cheese set contains a hard cheese knife for cheeses like cheddar, a cheese plane or shaver, a fork-tipped knife, and a spreader that works not only for soft cheeses but spreads, pates or cheese accompaniments.  The soft cheese knife typically has a very thin blade that is sometimes perforated with holes to prevent cheeses like Camembert from sticking.

Cheese knife sets range in price from about 20 dollars to as much as several hundred dollars for a 4-piece Wusthof cheese set. You'll find some sets come with a case or cutting board, typically bamboo.  While the cutting board is a nice feature, they are typically not big enough to serve a selection of several cheeses. However, they work beautifully if you were to bring out a wedge of cheese and some grapes after dinner. You may also find cheese sets bundled with picnic or wine baskets that may include additional tools such as a corkscrew for cheese-lovers who double as wine-lovers.  You may also find multi-purpose cheese knives that are like several tools in one.  For example, Global makes a single stainless steel knife that is suited both for hard and soft cheeses for around 70 dollars.

When shopping for a cheese set, look for stainless steel blades that are designed to keep their edge and have a lifetime warranty.   If you have the opportunity to try out different knives, take note of the knife's balance and weight.  Make sure it has a non-slip grip that feels comfortable in your hand.  Many cheese knives have very small handles which are ideal for some hands, but not for others.  If you're serving a lot of different cheeses to a group, it's important that you don't get hand fatigue from an uncomfortable cheese knife. Also, note that some cheese sets are dishwasher safe, but many allow only handwashing so read the accompanying instructions carefully.

A must for any cheese lover, as well as a great gift, your cheese knife set will be enjoyed with friends and family for years to come.
