Well first we need to ask what is the intended application of the rifle in question? Are you looking to build a tactical sniper rifle, close combat rifle, or more of a general multi situation tactical rifle?'

Many long range rifle scopes are designed for a particular caliber of bullet, they are even calibrated for individual bullet weight. This will be an important design specification to consider when determining a tactical sniper scope. You would not want to use a scope specifically designed for a.223 round on a.308 rifle.

The next in our list is a tactical rifle used for close combat situations. For this type of application many people like the "red dot" type of sights or a Holographic type of sight. The red dot sight made famous by "Aimpoint" is great for super fast target accusation. Unlike using the standard factory iron sights, where we must line up the rear sight with the front sight to be on target a red dot type of sight allows us just to center the "dot" on our target. This allows changing targets extremely fast and accurate.

The laser sight may also be considered for close combat. The laser sight "projects" a small dot on the target itself. Two things to consider here. First if the laser dot is noticed it may give away a tactical advantage. But on the other hand it can be used as a great deterrent in some situations, such as possibly a hostage situation. This is debated by professionals.

The last in our list is the multi situational rifle, sort of the jack of all trades or Swiss army knife of rifle. This is the perfect rifle for a tactical combination scope that offers aspects of many different scope designs. This would include both a red dot optic, laser and a small degree of magnification of the target. Many scopes of this type also include an option for a flashlight attachment for low light applications.

Also we can use a combination of optics on a single rifle. For instance, a red dot laser combination with removable magnification tube and separate under mounted flashlight. Or even mounting a small red dot sight on top of a longer range scope.

A Look At A Variety Of Pocket Knives

A pocket knife is a folding knife with a blade that fits inside the handle and that is small enough to fit in a pocket, with blades no larger than 3 to 5 in. in length. These knives are very versatile tools, and can be used for anything from opening an envelope, to cutting rope, to slicing fruit.

Pocket knives can cost anywhere from $1 at convenience stores, to thousands of dollars for custom, hand-crafted pieces. Well-made knives start at around $20.

Most light duty pocket knives are slip joints, which means the blade does not lock, but once it's opened it locks in place by a spring device that allows the blade to fold with a certain amount of pressure applied.

These knives often have more than one blade, (serrated, plain edged, saws) as well as a other tools such as bottle openers, corkscrews and scissors. A large tool selection is the signature of the Swiss Army Knife. These knives are issued to the army and sold to the public.

The German Army knife is large but light, with two blades opening from each side. It has hard plastic grips and aluminum liners. There are many traditional types of folding knives:

Locking Pocket Knives became popular in the 1900's. Companies like Buck, Benchmade, Camillus, Gerber, Kershaw Letherman and Spyderco, to name a few, have created a wide range of products with locks of all types. This most popular form is similar to a slip joint, except that instead of the user releasing the blade with pressure, the user has to press on a lever on the back of the knife handle to release the blade, adding a level of safety. There are other types of locks; some of the more popular ones are the liner lock, the frame lock, and the Axis lock.

Even the Swiss Army knife has adopted the locks on some knives. Leatherman tools are now available with locking blades. Most locking knives have only one blade, as large as can be fit in the handle. An electrician's knife typically has a locking screwdriver blade but a non-locking knife blade.

Nearly all pocket knives are legal to own, but they increasingly face legal restrictions on their use. While pocket knives are almost always used as tools, they do have the potential to become weapons. In many places it is illegal to conceal knives larger than a certain size, or with certain locking or opening mechanisms.

They are often banned or heavily restricted in secure areas, such as schools and airports. Switchblades and other "auto-openers" are banned from interstate shipment by the U.S. Government and prohibited entirely in many places, including 37 US states. Nevertheless, they retain a significant following, associated with those who enjoy camping, hunting, fishing, and so on.

Bug Out Bag - Tips to Building Your Own BOB

Bug Out Bags used to be only for the hard core survivalist. However with times getting more uncertain many every day people are looking to have one on hand. These bags are also known as a Boogie Bag, Go Bag, or GOOD bag 'Get Out Of Dodge'.

The concept of the Bug Out Bag is based on the idea that you will need to evacuate your home fast from some form of disaster. This is also known by some as a 72 hour kit. A BOB is very different from the concept of long term survival. The focus of a Go Bag is on fast evacuation. Your Boogie Bag should be ready to go, so you can leave quickly if a disaster should strike.

Some of the things you will need in a Bug out Bag are:

• Large Capacity Backpack


• Water (between 2 and 4 litres per day)


• Non-perishable food (I prefer freeze dried food for many reasons)


• Water purification supplies (tablets or filtration system)


• Cooking supplies (if needed)


• Eating utensils


• First Aid Kit


• Fire starting kit (matches, flint & steel, etc)


• Good Survival manual


• Tent (or Tarp) for shelter


• Sleeping Bag (or blankets)


• Maps


• Flashlight & extra batteries


• Emergency Radio (hand crank or solar power)


• Emergency Plan (with contact info, meeting locations)

Obviously this is quite a list. The big thing to consider when putting together your Bug Out Bag, is that you have to be able to carry it. So once you've put your bag out bag together, try carrying it. If you can't carry it, go through and see what can be let go.

Remember too that your backpack should be of hiking or camping quality. Not the cheap backpacks you pick up for a few dollars to hold school supplies.

The type of backpack I would suggest is one that has well padded shoulder straps and a waist belt. If it has a light weight frame as part of the backpack, all the better as it will help to distribute the load more. This is also a consideration if you'll be travelling with someone who doesn't have much experience in carrying heavy loads.

You can put your own bag together. However there are also several premade survival packs that would serve very well as a starting BOB. Those can save you time and even money in some cases. Also remember that most bug out bags will only have enough food for a few days - so it's important to know where you're going in case of emergency.

How To Defend Against A Knife - Don't Use The Stuff Taught In The Dojo!

Defences against Knife attacks, Firstly if at all possible get yourself and anyone else out of the potential danger area.....RUN AWAY.

Yes you heard right, run away. This is not a cowards way out, this is sensible. After all your potential assailant could be on drugs or just plain crazy. Nobody needs a dead hero.

However if you can't get away or you are cornered, try to talk your way out of the situation, tell the guy what he wants to hear or give him what he wants, if it's a mugging, but only if you think this will pacify him...

Let me explain. If it is apparent that your assailant is going to stab you whether you give him all your money or not then you must do something about the situation before this happens, either way you may get stabbed. Thats why this is a last resort and only attempted if YOU are certain he is going to attack you no matter what.

It's a judgement call that only you can make and if you ever do end up in that situation it won't be easy.

So, you're in that nightmare situation. How do you tackle him ?

Do you use the knife defences you learned in your martial arts classes ? I hope not because you'll very soon be bleeding to death if your assailant has any idea how to use the knife.

I tried an experiment about 5 years ago now with my training partner who is very fast with his hands and can handle a knife. We used a dummy knife (Thankfully) with some red ink on the end of it and I wore a white Gi.

I had at this time been training in the martial arts for about 16 years and had learned many many knife defences from many different styles so I was sure that whatever he came at me with I would be able to handle it.

He moved the knife very quickly from hand to hand and attacked from a variety of angles, slashing, lunging and really going for it. I successfully disarmed him several times, but each time he had also stabbed me several times (This is why the Police and Prison service use riot shields and several officers when dealing with knife attackers).

We worked this scenario using all the knife defences we had both learned from many different styles over the years but the one factor that kept coming up was the fact that this was simulating a real situation, so the attacker wasn't in stance and didn't come with a single attack in a straight line, he'd attack several times from any angle very fast.

What we were looking for was something that kept your vital organs as far away from the knife as possible whilst allowing you to attack the assailant.

Here's what we came up with: (This is just my opinion, based on over 20 years martial arts experience, and this one worked time after time. But remember only use as a last resort)

First you must take your attackers mind off what he's thinking about (I.e. stabbing you !) .........Spit in his face, not nice but remember this guy wants to stab you !

This gives you a fraction of a second to move.

Next, drop to your side, fast ! (Side breakfall) As you do this hook one of your feet round the back of his front foot and with your other foot, stamp hard onto the front of his knee. This will either snap or dislocate it (Again not nice but this guys going to stab you !) It also doesn't matter too much if you miss with the hook as you can still get the stamp in on the knee.

Either disarm him while he's on the floor and wait for the Police or just get out of there, he won't chase you.

The fall and hook take some practice to get fast but it's worth it as this is one well worth having in your arsenal.

The Value of Carrying Knives

If you want to carry a knife for protection it's probably not the worst thing you could do. Of course you may want to check the laws in your state before you do. But knives are so much more versatile than just thinking of them in terms as a weapon. There are many uses that should be considered. I carry a pocket knife and even though the one I generally carry and use is rather small I reach for it several times a day. Once you get used to the idea of carrying one you reach for it an amazing number of times throughout the day. That's only because there are an amazing number of things it can be used for.

Now don't get me wrong, I understand the value of the knife as an offensive weapon. I can remember bayonet training like it was last week. Picture maybe 400 soldiers with bayonets fixed on the end of their rifles on a parade field. Out front a drill sergeant screaming "what is the spirit of the bayonet" and in response "to kill". "I can't hear you", "to kill". You probably saw that movie right? Well for me and many others it was real. But for most of us that is not real or the real world. I would like to explore some of the ways carrying a knife as a "tool" rather than as a weapon.

I have been carrying a pocket knife most of life. I will open a package wrapped so tight, like it was meant not to be opened with out even thinking. Pulling out my pocket knife to cut a piece of rope is as automatic to me as blowing my nose. Ha. Sounds nutty right? It's true. I like carrying Buck Knives brand because I have carried this type most of my life. I actually thought for the longest time that "Buck Knife" was a type of knife not a brand. I'm sure many people have made this mistake. Of course though Buck Knives is only one type of brand. I also happen to like Case Knives. It's a matter of taste. Opening an envelope, a can, a bottle, cleaning your golf shoes, removing a hook from a fish. These are some of the incredible things carrying a little pocket knife can do.

The funny thing is people that know me also know I always have a knife handy. They will turn to me and say "could you open this". Maybe it's a can or a bottle. But they know that this boyscout is prepared. Ha again. You know what? It's true. I like carrying Swiss Army knives as well. It all depends what I am doing that day. If I know I am going to a barbecue than I consider what type of "tools" might be needed. See, to me that's the beauty of carrying a knife. I'll say the boyscout credo. "be prepared".

When I go fishing or hunting I may take the being "prepared" to the extreme. I will be carrying multiple knives. I will have pocket knives as well as a fixed bladed knife looped through my belt. But whatever happens during my adventures I will be carrying the "tool" to get the job done.
