I've wanted one of these knives for about four years. And the price I got it on Amazon was just to good to pass up. There are lots of reviews for this knife so I won't go into the usual things you're going to hear in a review. I'm going to tell you about pretty much the only thing that keeps this from being a five-star knife. And that is that the pivot is a rivet instead of an adjustable pivot pin. Because of this you can't adjust the opening action on the knife to suit your needs. I myself drilled out the rivet and replaced it with an adjustable pivot pin which really does make all the difference. One other tweak you might want to perform on this knife is taking off the pocket clip and bending it just a little(emphasis on little) so it's not quite so tight I also used a Dremel tool to smooth out the textured grip under the clip making it a little less likely to chew up your pocket. So whereas this knife is a good solid four-star knife, it's very easy to make it the five-star knife it should be.

243 Winchester - Is It Enough For Deer?

The 243 Winchester has been around for a long time. The .243 Winchester is a necked down 308 round and it inherits the overall good accuracy from the 308.

Bullets from 55 grains all the way up to 115 grain Match bullets are available for the 243. The most popular would be the 60 to 85 grain bullets designed for Varmints and the 95 to 105 grain bullets designed for Big Game.

The controversy over whether or not the 243 Winchester is an adequate round for Deer has been an ongoing one since the round was first introduced. Honestly, I don't expect to settle it here, I'mh just hoping to shed some light on the round and what it is, and is not, capable of.

In the right hands, the 243 is well capable of taking Deer sized game in the the right hands.

In years past, many problems were encountered with the bullets used. Truth be known, te bullets made for the 243 have caused more problems for the round than the power of the cartridge itself.

The problem existed (and exist to a certain extent even today) with the erratic performance of early bullets. There were many stories around about bullets not expanding as they passed through game animals and many problems with the bullets blowing up on impact. Sometimes a hunter would have this problem with the same bullets from the same box of ammo!

Technology has brought the 243 Winchester a long ways. Cores are bonded to jackets better and the overall performance of the little 24 caliber bullets has risen over the years.

Still, this round is not a beginners rifle. A marginal hit from the 243 can leave wounded game in the field. The 243 Winchester really shines in the hands of a competent rifleman or riflewoman. Many beginners lack the experience to control the "shakes" and wait patiently for the right time to place the first shot where it belongs.

For beginners, there are better light recoiling calibers available that should be considered. Rounds such as the 257 Roberts, 260 Remington and 7mm-08 Remington are all great Deer rounds. Not only that, they are light recoiling and do far more damage than the 243 in case of a marginal hit.

So before you run out and buy a beginning Deer hunter a 243 Winchester, stop and think and then move on up in caliber size. Let the new hunter get some experience under their belts before handing them this little Deer round.

Planning Your Hunt, Hunting With a Plan

Have you ever put together a hunting trip away from home and pretty much forgotten a bunch of your equipment? Or maybe left your thermals in the drawer at home only to find the temperature is 10 degrees in the place you want to hunt. I am sure I am not the only one that has ever done this! Although I may be the only one to admit it on the internet or anywhere else for that matter!

There is probably nothing more frustrating to a hunter than scouting an area for over 2 months to create a plan of harvesting their favorite big game animal, only to find that on opening day they left their rangefinder or binoculars at home. What is worse, they left them next to their insulated boots and had put their tags in the binoculars case for safe keeping. So much for the 2 month plan, just wait till next year!

I, like so many of us, struggled with this type of dilemma for many years until I discovered a simple checklist can eliminate all of this and it only takes a little time to put it together. You do not want to wait until the morning of your hunt to create this list, but you can wait until the week before if necessary. Everybody has their own methods of remembering things but for me a simple piece of paper with a breakdown of all my hunting equipment hung on the refrigerator works the best.

My breakdown usually looks something like this:

o Backpack

1. Knives

2. Rangefinder

3. Binoculars

4. Flashlight

5. Licenses and tags

6. Etc.

o Large Clothing Bag

1. Thermals

2. Camos

3. Hunting boots

4. Socks

5. Coveralls

6. Etc.

o Rifle Case

1. Rifle

2. Shells

3. Scope cleaners & covers

4. Tripods

5. Etc.

Then if you are going to be in a hunting camp:

o Tent

o All tent accessories

o Sleeping bag

o Cot or air mattress

o Lanterns

o Camp stove

o Food

o Etc.

There are many more things that can be added to the lists but I am sure everyone can figure that out. The point I am trying to get across is that if you start your list like this and add to it as time goes on, you will eventually have everything on your list so when you get ready to leave for hunting camp nothing gets left out.

With this type of planning, you can have things ready to load in your truck with plenty of time to spare and makes camp set up so much easier because you are not spending a lot of time looking for something that may or may not be in your gear. Once you are to the point of making all of this stuff easy, all you have to think about is getting to your tree stand or blind and getting the perfect shot at the animal you have been dreaming about.

This type of planning is not limited to hunting trips either as I use it for fishing trips or camping trips as well. Somebody once said "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail". I kind of see what they mean now. The biggest problem is, it was my 5th grade teacher that said it to me and I have not seen her in almost 40 years!

Which reminds me... make sure to put your list on the refrigerator, or your rifle cabinet, or somewhere obvious, so you do not forget where you put it!

Japanese Knives

In recent years, Japanese knives have become very popular for kitchen use. Japanese chef's knives may be seen in popular cooking shows, and are found at many cutlery stores.

Unlike other knives, such as German knives, Japanese are designed to be very lightweight, with a fine edge. Their steel blade is brittle and sharp, unlike other knives that are designed to be tough and flexible. As a result, these Japanese knives will be very, very sharp. The edge is less likely to bend, so it will stay sharper for longer. Japanese knives must be hand washed because the dishwasher may damage the blade, but quality Japanese blades don't usually need as much sharpening to attain a razor-sharp edge, but may need more frequent sharpening because the blade edge is not as durable.

Japanese cutlery usually uses one of two traditional forging methods, called honyaki or kasumi. Honyaki are high-carbon steel, and these forged knives are made entirely of one material. Kasumi blades are made from steel plus soft iron, forged together. The steel forms the blade edge, and the iron is the blade's body and spine. Both types of Japanese knives are known for being durable and very sharp.

There are many styles of Japanese kitchen knives. The most popular of these are the deba bocho, or kitchen cleaver, the santoku hocho, an all-purpose utility knife, and vegetable knives called either nakiri bocho or usuba hocho. There are dozens of other Japanese knife types, each used for specific tasks such as making udon or filleting tuna. Although there are so many different knife types, similar to a set that might be found in a western kitchen, most Japanese chefs choose just one or two of these to become their favorite knives. These knives are used for almost every kitchen task, despite their original design as a specialized knife. The choice of Japanese knives often depends just as much on personal style or taste than on the knife's intended purpose.

Unlike most Western-style knives, Japanese knives, particularly those produced in the past, were often single-ground, so that only one side holds a cutting edge. The traditional belief was that a knife designed in such a way cuts better, with cleaner cuts, though they often require more skill to use than one with a double-ground edge. They are believed to cause the food to slide up and away from the blade, rather than sticking to it. However, today many western-style knives are being produced in Japan; most santoku knives today are double-ground.

Most Japanese knives you'll find in stores today comes from Sakai, a region that has been producing high-quality samurai swords since the 1930s. And in fact, kasumi knives are made in the same manner as traditional samurai swords. Knife production there began back in the 16th century, and the Sakai region has remained the top cutlery producing area in Japan since then. Today, blades in Sakai are produced using a combination of modern technology and traditional hand tools.

Although Japanese knives are very sharp, they may be difficult to learn how to use, depending on their design. However, today's Japanese knives have begun including western features, such as the double-ground, to make such knives more usable for western chefs and home cooks.

For the price point, this is a spectacular deal on a Spyderco. I've owned other higher-end Spyderco knives that cost over 0 and to be honest, you definitely can tell the difference between them and the Tenacious...but at for a Tenacious, I got way more than I expected. It's a great every day carry (EDC) knife. It's lightweight but still has a decent heft to it, G-10 has a nice tackiness to it that allows a sure grip, reliable liner lock, and a pocket clip that allows for point up/down carry.

This knife was such a great deal, I actually bought both the Tenacious plain edge and the serrated blade. IMHO, I'd stick with the plain edge unless you really need a serrated blade for a particular purpose. Not sure if there's a manufacturing flaw in the liner lock of the serrated blade Tenacious, but the liner lock on the serrated blade doesn't seem to snap into place as securely as the liner lock on the plain edge Tenacious.

Anyways, for the price point, this is an outstanding EDC knife with some great features. Is it your typical Spyderco quality? Not really, but what the hell do you expect for ?

At just over this is a fantastic little knife. The G-10 handle feels great. The lockup is superb, with no play up and down or left and right. Deployment speed is very fast and the blade comes razor sharp out of the box. The ability to move the pocket clip tip up/tip down on both sides is another nice feature of this blade. Also, functional jimping on the thumb ramp allows you to get a strong grip on the handle. While this knife is made in China, that doesn't mean it is lower quality. The overall quality of the Spyderco Tenacious is outstanding.
